Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurological condition with a characteristic group of problems. Typically it will result in academic underachievement and poor behaviour despite good intellect and quality parenting. The condition is widespread, misunderstood and frequently remains undiagnosed. This may lead to unrealistic expectations, condemnation and rejection.
Common symptoms include inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, emotional instability, antisocial behaviour and poor co-ordination. Each child will vary in the type, number, frequency and severity of symptoms. Most children will carry some of these behaviours into adulthood with an increased tendency to alcohol and drug abuse and ongoing emotional difficulties.
The ADHD Association provides members with information on treatments and management, a library of books, videos and DVDs, newsletters, helpline counselling, speakers and support groups/contact with other ADHD families.
We also have monthly meetings for ADHD adults. A free inquiry pack can be sent out anywhere in NZ.
Winning a donation from Sovereign will help us achieve:
Printing and sending the latest information about Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder and its management to parents, schools, medical and community centres. Also to update our library with recent books and DVD's.
