Read more about Asthma & Respiratory Foundation of NZ (Inc.):
The Asthma Foundation is New Zealand's not-for-profit sector authority on asthma and other respiratory conditions. We advocate to government and raise awareness of respiratory conditions, fund research for better treatements and educate on best practice.
About 1 in 4 New Zealand children has asthma. New Zealand has one of the highest rates of asthma in the world and asthma is the condition that children are most commonly hospitalised for in New Zealand. It is estimated that in Wellington alone about 23,000 children have asthma and the condition is responsible for the loss of 55,000 school days each year in the capital.
The Asthma Foundation's vision is 'Better respiratory health for New Zealanders'. We are committed to reducing the burden of asthma on individuals, their families, our communities and our country. We aim to ensure that people with respiratory conditions have free and easy access to information, treatment and support. Since the establishment of the first asthma society forty years ago, the Asthma Foundation has provided assistance to the societies nationwide, and to increasing numbers of individuals with respiratory condition.
Asthma is more common than often thought and its seriousness is often grossly underestimated and misunderstood. Unfortunately, people still die from asthma atacks.
Winning a donation from Sovereign will help us achieve:
The Asthma Foundation's Asthma Friendly Schools programme aims to maintain the well-being and safety of students with asthma at school and during their extra curricular activities.
A donation from Sovereign Sunshine would assist us with providing high visibility vests for teachers to wear when on duty in the playground to identify themselves as the person children can contact for help in a medical emergency. The vests would have on the inside of them the names and photos of children at the school who have a medical condition such as asthma.
Every day in New Zealand a child runs the risk of an asthma attack while at school. Sometimes children know what to do when they find themselves in an emergency, but an unexpectedly severe attack can leave a child in need of immediate assistance. Through wearning one of these vests the teacher then knows what to do, and if required, would know where their medication such as an inhaler would be located. This would be a great tool for relieving teachers and parents have peace of mind knowing the child is safe.
