Brothers in Arms

Brothers in Arms (BIA) is a one on one friendship mentoring programme for young boys and girls at risk across Auckland. It has been in existence for just over two years and has helped over 100 kids to find positive pathways in life and in their communities. BIA take referrals from the police, health and education sectors. These young people are matched with our awesome volunteer mentors, who we recruit, train, match and supervise. These mentors hang out with their mentees once a week and help us by providing NZ youngsters opportunities and experiences they otherwise wouldn't have in their situations e.g. simply mowing lawns, cooking a BBQ, enjoying beaches, climbing mountains, trying out sea sports. Mentoring has proven itself as a powerful way to help young people. Young people often show improvements in self-esteem, relations with family/friends, participation in education and positively connecting with community.

BIA aims to match a further 40 young people (9-16 years) from high needs communities with a focus on South Auckland for this project. Mentors and mentees commit to hanging out for at least one year, and meeting weekly. Providing a long-term supportive friendship that in most cases is lacking. Costs would cover recruitment, training, matching, supervision, ongoing training and events throughout the year.
