Variety - The Children's Charity is the 'fun way to help Kiwi kids'. Variety provides support to New Zealand children who are sick, disabled or disadvantaged through a range of programmes and individual grants.

Variety works with communities all over New Zealand to 'fill the gaps' for Kiwi kids, because Variety believes every child deserves the opportunity to achieve their potential - to be the best they can be.

Since Variety's establishment in New Zealand in 1989, it has provided grants worth over $11.3 million to deserving Kiwi kids.

We would use the Sovereign Sunshine donation for the Variety Kids on the Move Programme which provides specialised trikes for children with mobility issues and funds Variety’s Bikes for Kids Programme.

In 2007/08, Variety provided 46 specialised trikes, bikes, tandem bikes, handcycles or scooter boards to children and child-related organisations, and every year, there is demand for even more.

The benefits to the children are numerous and include an opportunity for them to become active members of their family and community. Feedback from medical professionals is that the trikes assist the children to development muscle tone, increase coordination and provide the children with an important sense of independence, as many of them are wheelchair bound.

The Variety Bikes for Kids Programme is now in its 6th year and forms a special part of Variety’s Kids on the Move Programme. Bikes for Kids rewards children from low-decile schools who are considered role models within their communities with a brand-new bikes – for many, this is their first bike. This recognition not only benefits the child concerned, but provides an incentive for their peers to follow in their footsteps and become good school and community citizens.
