Autism New Zealand's mission is to improve the quality of life for people with autism, Aspergers syndrome, those with associated conditions, their family/whanau and those who support them.
The organisation seeks to fulfill its mission by promoting early accurate diagnosis, practical support to families, education and training for parents and professionals, lending library and bookshop, advocating for specialist services, increasing awareness in health and education professionals and amongst the general public.
Winning a donation from Sovereign will help us achieve:
Autism and Aspergers Syndrome still remain relatively unknown disabilities among the general population however, international research leads us to believe that 1 in 100 people are affected - an estimated 40,000 people in New Zealand.
Autism NZ is a small organisation but is growing to meet the needs of our members and the community. With greater public awareness of Autism leading to an early diagnosis we constantly receive requests for information and support programmes not only from families but also from those professionals who work with people with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
The Sovereign Sunshine donation will be used for the following projects:-
- Provide information in the form of Parent Packs for parents of newly diagnosed children, library books for both national and branch libraries, the production of newsletters and special information on particular issues and topics for individual family inquiries.
- Because most of our branches do not have staff and are in reality parent support groups who are not always readily available, a nationwide 0800 number for people needing information, advice and support is available. The number of calls on this line has risen 145% since 2003 and we now receive on average 346 calls per month.
- Our website is one of the main tools we use to provide support to our our members, families, their caregivers and the wider community. It includes branch pages that our branches can use to promote their local activities and includes an online opportunity to purchase books from the bookshop and borrow from the library. It also holds information on all our training courses and general information on autism spectrum disorder and our organisation.
- We also seek to provide training for our volunteers and staff to up-skill them in supporting parents, siblings and partners who find the daily challenge of working and living with someone affected by autism spectrum disorders physically and emotionally demanding.
By providing information and enabling parents to gain knowledge we believe that, with the support of Sovereign Sunshine, we can help reduce the stress and thereby reduce the need for secondary health care for parents. International research has shown that the levels of stress in parent with children with ASD are higher than those parent with a child with a terminal illness. In addition by providing parents with the skills to enable their child affected by ASD to achieve the highest level of education and integration into the community possible, we will reduce the level of input from the community / government toward their ongoing care for life.
