Read more about NZ Epilepsy Assist Dog Trust:
We provide and train dogs for people with severe Epilepsy who cannot be helped with medication or surgery. The dog becomes a friend and bonds with the client and sometimes after a few months begins to recognise a seizure before it happens, allowing the person to be safe with a warning.
The NZ Epilepsy Assist Dogs Trust was formed when it became understood that dogs can help people with severe epilepsy to lead a safer and more independant life.
NZ is one of three countries in the world to have such an association.
Legislation has been approved for registered epilepsy assist dogs to have the status of working dogs with legal access to public places, transport etc.
Dogs can help people with epilepsy by:
- becoming a companion
- becoming aware of impending seizures and alerting owner
- allowing owner to feel safe
- helping owner to be more independant
The criteria for owning a Seizure Assist Dog:
- must meet dog ownership requirements
- must be over 12 years of age
- must have frequent seizures
Training takes two years
- dog and owner are visited twice weekly by the trainer
- owner is intructed in daily training schedule
