Empowering parents, caregivers and whanau who have children and family members with disabilities, health impairments or special needs through support and the provision of information.

We value - parenting; the role of the family; the sharing of knowledge and experience; the dignity and worth of all people; the role of volunteers; diversity within our organisation.

Parent to Parent is a nationwide, not for profit organisation that was formed in 1983 by a group of parents and professionals who believed in the value of parents supporting parents when faced with the challenge of parenting a child with a disability, health impairment or special need. Through a network of 10 regional groups and trained volunteer Support Parents we provide information and support to thousands of families each year.

Services to families are free and include:

  • One to One support through trained volunteer Support Parents;
  • Information on more than 3600 different conditions;
  • Family activities and sibling support programmes;
  • Sibsupport N.Z;
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder information and advisory service,
  • Altogether Autism;
  • Seminars and workshops;
  • Support group meetings;
  • Advocacy;
  • Video Conferencing service connecting families medical professionals and community.

Caring for a family member who has a special need is an experience that few parents anticipate or plan for and one that can bring strong emotional responses and challenges in day to day living. Families must not only cope with the typical demands of everyday life but must also learn the languages of the medical, financial, legal and the special education worlds. Parent to Parent is here to support families through this life journey.

We would increase the number of our unique sibling support programmes that we run,  throughout New Zealand.  Currently we have long waiting lists.

The aim of the programme is to provide siblings with an experience that will help them cope with the everyday challenges they face living with a brother or sister who has a disability or special need. They learn new life skills, and as a result feel more empowered and confident.  It is a time for fun and a break from the pressures they
face at home.  There are a wide range of fun activities, including theatre sports, drama, games, trust and recreational activities.

"The activities were cool and it gave me a chance to express my feelings with others who understand" says a recent attendee.

No. helped per project: Approx 350 people would benefit, with benefits flowing through to the whole family, whanau, school and community groups, as attendees learn new life skills, become more informed, and are better able to cope and function in their everyday lives.
Existing sponsors or funders: We receive funding from the Ministry of Health, from other funders such as Lotteries and COGs and grants, but as we have experienced huge growth in demand for our services of over 41% in the last 6 months, without further funding we will not be able to meet this demand. Currently we have waiting lists for siblings to attend our programmes and cannot provide them in all areas required.
