Child Cancer

The Child Cancer Foundation is a not-for-profit charity that exists to provide practical, emotional and financial support to children with cancer, their families and the health professionals who care for them. The Foundation began in 1978 as a unique partnership between parents and health professionals who recognised the need for extra support and advocacy for children and their families on their childhood cancer journey.

Now, 35 years down the track the Foundation has four divisions based in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, supporting 23 branches around the country.

For families living with childhood cancer the Foundation provides:
  • support and information for families upon diagnosis and throughout their journey with cancer
  • financial assistance in a variety of forms including meals, transportation and accommodation for children receiving treatment and visiting family members
  • parent support groups and support for all families including bereaved families
  • education initiatives and scholarships to assist children with cancer and in some cases their siblings/families
  • access to holiday homes to allow families some special time together

Each year we need $7 million to keep providing our current level of support to children and families. We don’t receive any government funding or support from other cancer support agencies, so we need every bit of help that kind people in our community can give.

On average, three new children per week in New Zealand are diagnosed with cancer and from this point onwards, the child and family are forced to travel back and forth to the hospital hundreds of times for treatment, often spending weeks away from home.

The Foundation is there for these people every step of the journey, supporting newly-diagnosed families but also those dealing with treatment and those transitioning back into the community. Our support also continues for families facing the palliative stage of the cancer journey and those who have lost a child.
