Did you know that clean, green beautiful New Zealand has one of the worst records for child abuse in the developed world?  On average a child is abused to death every 5 weeks in our country. 57 children a day are proven to be abused -  and that’s just the ones that are brought to the attention of authorities.

Child Abuse is the nations single most important public health challenge affecting communities, business, justice, health, education and social services.

It is estimated that 1 million people are either currently suffering abuse or living with the long term effects of past child abuse.

This is affecting every one of the nearly 4 ½ million people in our country in some way…

So what needs to happen?  We must:
• Increase awareness of the issue and create an environment where people are talking about child abuse
• Provide people in a position to help with the skills to be able to do so
• Create a society where child abuse is not tolerated and where everyone takes responsibility for keeping our children safe.

Child Matters is New Zealand’s specialist child abuse prevention organisation working at all levels of our society to make the changes necessary to keep our children safe.  Our purpose is to inspire New Zealanders to ensure every child flourishes in an environment safe from all abuse.

We do this through raising understanding and awareness of the issue, educating and inspiring those working with children and influencing change in society’s attitudes and behaviours.

Winning a donation from Sovereign will help us achieve:

Child Matters will use the donated funds to ensure that those people who are in the best position to help keep our children safe, are provided the skills and training to do so.

Training and education is key in preventing child abuse…
