Mission: IHC will advocate for the rights, inclusion and welfare of all people with an intellectual disability and support them to lead satisfying lives in the community. IHC is New Zealand's largest provider of services and support to people with intellectual disabilities and their families.
Our history reaches back almost 60 years, to a group of families who set up an association to lobby for a better deal for their children. IHC remains firmly committed to the values these early parents represented - the inclusion of all people with intellectual disabilities in their local communities in all aspects of their lives. In addition to providing services, IHC is committed to advocating for all people with an intellectual disability, both nationally and internationally. This advocacy role is not funded through government; neither are the Self Advocacy, Communications, Fundraising, Volunteering, Governance and Membership aspects of IHC's work in the community.
Winning a donation from Sovereign will help us achieve:
The Sovereign Sunshine donation would be used for school holiday activities for young people with an intellectual disability For many families with a child with a disability, the school holidays are the periods when they feel most stressed and require the most support. Often youth with a disability cannot access mainstream holiday programmes because of their level of disability, which may require 1:1 carer support.
Mainstream programmes with activities geared to physically active youth will generally exclude youth who also have a physical disability from participating. Teenagers have difficulty in going out independently with their friends from school due to their disability, and cannot be left unsupervised at home during the day (unlike other teenagers over 14 years of age).
IHC, through its service arm of IDEA Services, tries to respond to families' requests with holiday activities providing opportunities for children and teenagers to participate in activities with people outside of the home and school environment. However, holiday activities are outside of the IDEA Services core service streams that are funded by the Ministry of Health, so fundraising is required to cover costs of activities (e.g. entrance fees) and reduce the financial demand for families. The Sovereign Sunshine donation would be distributed nationally, to provide special day outings in the holidays for young people with an intellectual disability. The outings would vary, depending on the interests and abilities of the young people in each area, and include visits to places of educational or recreational interest in the community e.g. zoos, nature reserves, museums, swimming pools, theatres, parks and beaches. Holiday outings are beneficial to both the young people with disabilities (enabling them to have fun and social interaction with other young people) and their families (enabling them to have a break from the requirements of 24 hour care for their disabled child and, for many, the opportunity for quality time with their other children).
