Children's Day 2010 marks the 10th anniversary of the National Event in Aotearoa.

This year's Children's Day is Sunday 7 March 2010 and the theme is "Praise and Encouragement".

New Zealand's Children's Day is a national, non-commercial day to celebrate how special and important our children are. It provides New Zealanders with an opportunity to give time to children and take part in fun activities that start new traditions as well as continue old ones.
Many nations in the world have a Children's Day but ours is unique and special to New Zealand. We celebrate this day across the country through events, activities and celebrations.

We hope you will do something special with children on that day or organise a special event in your workplace or community. The most important gift an adult can give to a child is the 'gift of time'.

Children's Day has five important messages:

  • Giving time
  • Praise and encouragement
  • Love and affection
  • Listening and talking
  • New experiences

Vision:To see children celebrated, nurtured and treasured by all.

Mission: To establish Children's Day as an ongoing tradition in New Zealand.

Objectives of Children's Day:

  • To heighten awareness of the importance and needs of children in society, and ways of promoting their development
  • To promote a national focus on children and motivate adults towards positive appreciation and support of children
  • To promote community responses for the ongoing celebration of Children's Day through local ownership and widespread participation
  • To embrace the Children's Day Charter

The key theme for 2010 will be 'PRAISE AND ENCOURAGEMENT'
There are many ways you can get involved and celebrate Children’s day, whether it’s planning an event of your own, going to one of the local events with your children, or simply spending the day taking part in some of your own activities.

Now is a good time to start thinking about what you and your friends and family will be doing on Children’s Day. This year the children’s day website has a page describing some of the events held on Children’s Day 2009 and a tips page for prospective organisers. Check it out and see what you and your family can do to praise and encourage your children in 2010.

So get involved, spread the word, and help support children in New Zealand on Children’s Day.
