Duffy Books in Homes

The Alan Duff Charitable Foundation Duffy Books in Homes programme is a literacy programme aimed at breaking the cycle of booklessness amongst children at low decile schools throughout New Zealand. The philosophy behind the programme is simple - to break the cycle of 'booklessness'. Kids who can't read become adults who can't communicate and that's a serious disadvantage in a world that operates on the written word.

We have a record 67 new schools joining the programme in 2009. Each of these schools enters in a 50:50 sponsorship partnership to fund the programme in their school. This funding will enable these schools to receive the benefits of the programme until ongoing sponsorship is found. Each child receives a minimum of five brand new books each year to take home and keep.
