History
Family Planning began in 1936 to help women choose the size of their families and the spacing of their children. As the needs of New Zealanders have changed over generations, so have the services we offer, and the issues with which we are involved.
Family Planning is a membership based organisation that has over 30 clinics throughout New Zealand, runs health promotion services out of 15 locations and is also known for its research, training of health professionals and development of award winning resources.
Family Planning’s Mission
To promote a positive view of sexuality and to enable people to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health.
Services
Family Planning Clinics
Family Planning has over 30 clinics nationwide and records approximately 175,000 client visits each year. We offer confidential, non-judgemental services which include: contraceptive advice, sexually transmissible infection checks and treatment, menopause advice, cervical smears, vasectomy, and pregnancy testing and advice.
Health Promotion Services
Family Planning offers health promotion services from 15 units across New Zealand. Between them they deliver 1,400 workshops each year working with children, young people and parents and teachers. Programmes cover a diverse range of topics including: parenting programmes, talking to your children about sex and sexuality, relationship skills, keeping safe and resisting sexual pressure.
As part of our health promotion services we also produce a range of resources and information on sexuality and sexual health. We also work with often overlooked or hard to reach groups such as refugees and migrants and people with disabilities.
Policy and Advocacy
As a recognised expert Family Planning regularly comments on Government and non-government legislation, policies and programmes. We also advocate for the advancement of sexual and reproductive health and rights, to ensure all New Zealanders can enjoy equal, affordable access to the services and information they need.
Winning a donation from Sovereign will help us achieve:
Family Planning would use the Sovereign donation towards reprinting Open and Honest – a parent’s guide to talking to your children about sex and sexuality. This booklet provides parents with the skills, knowledge and confidence to have ‘that talk’ with their children about sexuality, relationships and growing up.
International research that shows that communicating with children and young people about sex and sexuality can delay sexual activity, increase the use of contraception and result in fewer sexual partners.
But how to start? Open and Honest encourages parents to cease opportunities as they arise; not shy away from answering their children’s questions and gives them the knowledge to be able to answer honestly.
What parents have said:
“Be more available and answer questions in an open and comfortable way.”
“Helped me to think about how I can answer my children’s questions.”
“Be accurate, factual, approachable and non judgemental.”
