Read more about Heart Children New Zealand:
Heart Children New Zealand is the only organisation dedicated to supporting the 12 kiwi kids born every week with a heart defect in New Zealand. This is New Zealand's most common serious birth abnormality needing ongoing medical intervention, we are not funded by the government and as such rely on the generous support of the public to provide our vital services.
Heart Children New Zealand's vision is to be the best childrens charity in New Zealand.
Values
- Heart Children and their families first.
- Respect with compassion.
- Education and empowerment.
- Integrity at all times.
- Passionate and professional.
- Committed to succeed.
Our mission is to provide and facilitate the best support and care to children with heart conditions and their families within New Zealand.
Key facts
- Heart disease is the leading cause of death in young children.
- Childhood heart disease takes more lives then all other childhood diseases combined.
- A disproportionate number of Maori and Pacific Island children suffer from acquired heart disease often as a result of Rheumatic Fever.
- 450 children will have Open Heart Surgery this year alone.
- 1000 children a year are treated at Auckland's Paediatric Cardiology Unit.
There is not a day goes by when a child does not undergo open heart surgery, or new parents face the prospect of caring for a chronically ill child. We believe that no child should face a heart condion alone. We provide practical and emotional assistance, equipment, social affiliation, education, information and advocacy to heart children and their families in the hospital environment and when they return home.
Winning a donation from Sovereign will help us achieve:
$15,000 will assist in the provision of our Family Support Program. Developments in modern science have meant a number of heart defects can be detected in utero during a routine ultra sound scan. This development allows Heart Children New Zealand to provide support every step of the way, before a child's birth, from childhood through to adulthood.
Daily visits to Auckland's Heart Unit from our Family Liaison Worker and Family Support Workers provide much needed support to children and families in the hospital environment. And when they return home the local branch or support group continue to support these families at the local level. Our services range from emotional assistance to practical assistance, information/education, provision of equipment, affiliation and events like our heart kids camps.
Emotional/Practical Assistance
Having a heart defect can mean on-going treatment or surgeries to correct the defect. Auckland's Heart Unit is the only facility in New Zealand that has the medical equipment and technical expertise required for many of the procedures/operations needed. This can mean further emotional and financial hardship to our families as 70% live out of the Auckland area. Emotional support is provided to children and their families for e.g. counselling, a shoulder to cry on, social affiliation. Or it could be practical assistance for e.g. emergency packs, education, advocacy, transport, as well as financial assistance.
