Home and Family is recognised within Canterbury as providing a longstanding service that is highly professional; and our low costs make our services accessible to those who need it most.

Our aim is to enhance and enrich the lives of individuals and families from all economic and cultural backgrounds.

Our Mission - Offering accessible strengths-based social services that enable people to make a positive difference in their lives their families and communities. "At the heart of our services are the children effected by decisions their parents make". We offer a unique mix of connected services, including counselling, 24 hour supported and emergency accommodation, and a range of support groups and educational courses. Our 24 hour Supported and Emergency Accommodation programme was established 32 years ago. There are very limited services of this type in Christchurch and none that offer our depth of support and back up. A stay at our accommodation gives our clients the chance to make positive changes in their lives and can often be a life changing experience for them and their families. We offer a combination of practical advice, modelling, parenting education courses and counselling.

Parenting skills - An overwhelming focus within our programme is teaching Mums the skills to parent in an effective and safe manner. A large percentage of our clients have been victims of or perpetrators (or at risk of becoming perpetrators) of domestic violence. They may also be suffering from a diagnosed mental health disorder such as depression, bi-polar, anxiety, etc. and/or Drug, Alcohol and Gambling addictions. The safety of the children involved is of paramount importance, hence the need for the staff to be on hand 24/7. The length of time a family stays at the accommodation can vary from a few weeks to several months. This is assessed on the needs of each individual.  Our clients also have access to our counselling facilities and this has proved to be an important part of the programme for them.

Counselling: In the 2007/08 year, 572 individuals/couples/children & families benefited from our counselling service. (Including 112 children & young people) Issues included loss, grief, relationships, depression, suicidal thoughts, mental health issues, addiction, abuse, domestic violence and families affected by suicide. The majority of people that use our services are from a lower socio-economic background and are often in a crisis situation when they contact us. The counselling we offer is charged at an affordable fee, and this fee is waived completely if the client has no means with which to pay. In this way we can ensure that people from all walks of life can receive the help they so desperately need, regardless of their financial situation.

Winning a donation from Sovereign will help us achieve:

The Sovereign donation would be used to house women and children at our 24 hour supported accommodation. It costs approximately $140 per night for a women and her children to stay at the at the accommodation. A donation from Sovereign Sunshine would help to cover some of these costs.
