Read more about Kenzie’s Gift:
Kenzie's Gift is unique in that its sole focus is the emotional well being of children and families affected by cancer. There is presently no organisation in New Zealand that does this. Kenzie's Gift will initially be working in the Auckland region. It was established to reduce the emotional and psychologuical trauma children face through the painful, frightening and traumatic cancer treatments and the uncertainties living with cancer produces. According to the Listener, Nov 2007, New Zealand is falling behind in international standards in meeting the emotional needs of children with cancer.
Kenzie's Gift aims to meet these needs through the therapeutic interventions of play therapy, family, art and music therapy.
Aims:
- To encourage and allow the family / Child themselves to have as normal a childhood and family life as possible. This is through appropriate play opportunities, therapies and support.
- To encourage the opportunity for extended family and whanau to participate in play, therapies and support with the aim to enhance communicative and expressive opportunities.
- To provide ongoing support for families and whanau through survivorship and bereavement.
- Upon the family request, liaise with schools, employers and relevant groups which are an integral part of their lives, offering support, education and advise around the families and child's needs.
