K.I.C. stands for Kids in Cars and was originally set up as a charity to raise money for Children living with Cancer. Five years on from its introduction, K.I.C. is now expanding and will now also be known as Kids in the Community.
Nigel Karl founded Kids in Cars in 2005 with his PlaceMakers shadow car. Over the years Nigel had been asked to drive all around Auckland events, not only to display the vehicle, but also to talk to kids (young and old) about driver safety and awareness.
Five years ago, Nigel received a call from a colleague at PlaceMakers that would plant the seed for K.I.C. This phone call asked Nigel to display his shadow car at an upcoming event and opened Nigel up to the world of Camp Quality - the not-for-profit organisation that supports and helps young children living with cancer and their families.
When the event arrived, Nigel had managed to arrive with not only his shadow car, but also four more! Nigel spent the day driving kids through the "boondocks" of Henderson and seeing the joy on their faces, decided that he could do much better than this. As it happens, this was the beginning of Kids in Cars and the 2006 event planning took off.
Today, Kids in Cars is a well-oiled engine and an absolute fun family day out. Held at Pukekohe Park Raceway for the past four years it has grown in leaps and bounds and now has concreted itself into many young children and family's calendar’s. The annual event is always held in conjunction with the beginning of Camp Qualities week long camp for the children and they spend the day at the Park busying themselves with riding around the track in cars and trucks, eating yummy food and playing on many of the entertainment rides. Racing Ray Williams, Shane van Gisbergen, Angus Fogg and Greg Murphy are just a few celebrities that have been seen supporting the Kids in Cars cause in the past, and there has even been the odd Shortland Street actor attend!
The K.I.C. cause, although originally set up to raise funds for Camp Quality, has become so successful that Nigel is now taking the next step with Kids in the Community. Beginning 2010 Nigel will raise and donate funds to various other children's charities all around New Zealand. The annual track day will always be Camp Qualities kick start to camp.
Once a year the KIC & Purple Heart crews get together and surprise families from our charities of choice and shower them in a little Christmas Cheer !!!!!!
To date KIC now supports the following charities – Camp Quality – Purple Heart Foundation – Ronald McDonald House – Make-A-Wish Foundation – Kidney Kids – Cure Kids & Kidz First Children’s Hospital.
Winning a donation from Sovereign will help us achieve:
If KIC won, the donation would allow us to arrange more things for the kids - and we are also looking to purchace a shadow car which would be used to collect the kids and their families and take them out for lunch and also collect the child on their birthday and drive them to school.
