Kids With Arthritis is a support group for New Zealand children with arthritis and their families. KWA is a non-profit group that is supported by and partly funded by Arthritis New Zealand.
KWA is based in Auckland and we currently have 65 families involved in the group. The majority are from the greater Auckland area, but we have other families from Kaitaia, Whangarei, Tauranga, Huntly, Ngaruawahia, New Plymouth, Napier and Nelson.
Children and Arthritis
In the western world one in a thousand children will develop of form of juvenile arthritis. Approximately two thirds of these children are girls. Juvenile arthritis can affect a child at any age. Our group has a range of very young children to young adults.
History
K.W.A. (originally called ‘The Joint Connection’) was formed in 1997 by Rhonda Butler and Kirsten Kennedy, both being parents of a child with arthritis.
In 1999 the running of the group was passed on to Karen Derrick, and the late Maureen Purdom, with support from Bruce Purdom. Since 2006 Karen has been joined by Bruce Purdom and Phil Donnelly as the co-ordinators of the group. Ten years on we are still going strong.
Objectives
The objectives of the group are:
- to provide support and information to parents, the children with arthritis and their families
- to organise events for parents and families in order to share experiences and better understand juvenile arthritis
- to raise awareness in the community
