New Zealand Blue Light Background. New Zealand Blue Light is a community policing initiative that runs programmes and activities for youth throughout New Zealand free from drugs, alcohol and violence.

Its goals are to:
1- Reduce youth crime
2- Build community partnerships
3- Build young peoples self esteem
4- Enhance community safety
5- Build positive youth and police partnerships

Blue Light programmes and activities include sporting, cultural, educational, community and crime reduction. There are currently 63 branches of Blue Light throughout New Zealand. Last year was the 25th anniversary of Blue Light. Each year over 200,000 young people and their families are involved in Blue Light programs either directly or indirectly. Although the Police and community support Blue Light through the delivery of 'man-hours' the actual costs of programmes are met by donations and sponsorship. The National Body runs a variety of national events and programs as shown below which are supported by branches.

Examples of some of the annual National events and programs run by The National Body are 'Rainbows End Fundays', the 'National Waka Ama Competition', 'National Blue Light Youth Surfing Championships' and the 'National PCT Competition'.

Local branches also run their own localised programs and activities to target their own local youth issues. Examples of these programs run under Blue Light include youth mentoring programs, Marae based holiday programs, drug and alcohol courses, and outdoor activities and training (ie canoeing, boating, tramping and rock climbing).
