Read more about Pindrop Foundation:
Pindrop was set up to raise awareness and funds for cochlear implants (bionic ears) and to draw attention to issues relating to hearing loss. Pindrop also supports recipients and their families by providing information, advice and support groups. Pindrop is also developing a free hearing conservation programme for school aged children designed to teach them to protect their ears from noise induced hearing loss.
Over 750 New Zealanders, from newborns to octogenarians, have received a cochlear implant since 1986. It has been estimated that there are over 400,000 hearing impaired New Zealanders, 4000 of whom could possibly benefit from a cochlear implant and yet a good many of these people aren't aware that the option exists for them to consider.
At present there are over 100 people on the public waiting list due to capped funding, some have been there for 5 years. Cochlear implants are life changing devices and can help a recipient be more independent, have more confidence, increase their self esteem and to get back their quality of life by reconnecting them with family and friends.
The degree of useful hearing varies from one individual to another however all recipients usually find they have:
- Increased ability to recognise speech without lip-reading
- Improved ability to recognise normal, everyday environmental sounds
- Improved speech or lipreading
- The ability to hear softer sounds
- Increased confidence and self esteem
- Increased ease and enjoyment in communication with family and friends
- Children can develop age appropriate speech and language, and communicate better at home, work and school.
The Pindrop Foundation is the public face and fundraising "arm" of the of Northern Cochlear Implant Trust which governs the public programme. The Trust is governed by a Board of Trustees who collectively offer a wealth of experience and expertise in assisting the Trust to pursue its goal to provide a world class cochlear Implant service for adults and children.

Pindrop has set up an adolescent support group for teenagers with cochlear implants with a view to extending this to all teenagers with a hearing loss in the future. Our intention is to help the teenagers improve their social skills, develop their self esteem and confidence, provide them with mentors and give them leadership opportunities by bringing them together regularly to do some fun stuff in a safe and supportive environment.
Teenagers with a hearing loss often feel isolated from their peers and can struggle to feel accepted as "one of the gang". It is heartbreaking to hear that often they are ignored by both teachers and classmates because of the perception that it is too difficult to communicate with them. Loss of confidence in the teenage years can stay with someone for life and can have a debilitating effect.
We would use this much needed funding for social outings, training workshops, engage motivational speakers and to run camps for the teenagers and their families. We would also use the funding to extend the invitation to all teenagers with a hearing loss. Our goal is to provide a platform that enables these teenagers to realise their full potential and to feel good about themselves and their place in the world.
