“I have learnt a lot about myself and also have grown a lot more.  It was a huge step out of my comfort zone and it also takes a lot of courage to do something like this.”  Bethany (Ranfurly)

“I learnt important life skills such as organisation, resilience, respect, perseverance and getting along which will help me in the future”.  Jarred (Whitianga)

The Spirit of Adventure Trust was established in 1973 as part of a world-wide movement recognising tall ships as an effective environment for young people to learn the value of team-work and develop leadership skills.

In the intervening decades we’ve taken tens of thousands of youths to sea.  This year alone we will transform the lives of more than 1200 young New Zealand trainees.

As well as honing numerous skills - including communication, self-discipline, self esteem, resilience, co-operation, confidence and tolerance – our voyages foster enduring friendships and networks among trainees.

The programmes run aboard Spirit of New Zealand are open to all young New Zealanders:

• 10-Day Youth Development Voyages (15-18 years)
• 5-Day Spirit Trophy Voyages (Year 10 students)
• Advancement – for ex-trainees on V+1 (one year on) and V+5 (five years on) voyages
• Inspiration – 5-day voyage for disabled young people
• Leadership – student school trustees
• Training – for Naval cadets

Special Sailings – weekend, day or evening sailings for teachers, corporates, service and sports clubs.

Our drive for excellence has seen us gain international recognition, including being awarded Sail Training International ‘Sail Training Organisation of the Year’, 2008.

Recent university studies in Edinburgh, Sydney and Otago have backed up three decades’ anecdotal evidence that trainees show a marked increase in self-esteem, resilience and social skills as a result of a voyage on a tall ship.
