START Inc was established in 1987 to address the healing needs of sexually abused children, youth and adults alongside providing support for their families, consultation, prevention and education for the wider community.
START is an independent Christchurch based social service agency that was established to attend to a gap in social services in Canterbury. At the time there was no counselling provision particularly tailored to the needs of children who disclosed sexual abuse.
These days START provides counselling for children, youth and adults who have been subject to sexual crime, alongside specific support for their whanau. START employs ACC approved counsellors and charges no top up fee for these services. The whanau support services are also free to clients. This honours START's strong commitment to providing accessible and holistic services alongside professionalism. Clinical staff are all members of appropriate professional bodies.
Our services are provided from a comfortable suburban house in St Albans which nestles anonymously into the neighbourhood. This relaxed and healing environment is well served with car parking and a nearby bus route.
START also regularly provides consultation and education for the wider general and professional community.
Whilst established by Pakeha women START Inc. responds to requests for services from all parties (genders, ethnicities, ages) and seeks appropriate support and guidance from external supervisors to undertake their work.
Winning a donation from Sovereign will help us achieve:
START has a specific need to extend its premises to enable increased service capacity. Any donation would be put towards this goal.
Sadly, START has had long waiting lists over many years due to on-going resource constraints. Part of addressing this problem involves extending our premises to accommodate more workers and clients. We have an excellent homely facility at present and there is scope to convert an unused garage on-site to more counselling/meeting and/or office space. We have an architect providing drawings for us free of charge at present and we are fundraising actively to achieve this long held goal. We expect to be able to fund the increased staffing required however we are fundraising for the building costs. The clear outcome will be extra service capacity for children/youth and families who have suffered from sexual crime.
