The Yes Disability Resource Centre actively supports disabled people through supporting them to take maximum control of their own lives, to seek out opportunities and achieve their full potential as individuals within the community.
In focusing on ability not disability and wanting to empower youth with disabilities, we set up the Carabiner Mentoring Program. A Carabiner is a vital piece of equipment that provides support, confidence and guidance required for a Climber to reach the pinnacle of their mountain. Carabiner Mentoring supports young people with disabilities to reach the pinnacle of their lives by acting as a Carabiner (or link) between young people with disabilities and adult mentors in their common area of interest. Carabiner links potential with success. Carabiner began with a pilot in early 2008. The results were so effective that support was sort for the program to continue and grow.
Carabiner matches young people aged between 17-24 years who demonstrate vision, passion and perseverance towards a specific goal with someone who has experience in the area that the young person is aspiring towards. This goal may be recreational, academic, social (gaining confidence) or business related. The mentor may or may not have a disability as the important link is the shared interest and the introduction to a new network that can support the young person with his or her dream. Carabiner and our Mentors create channels for the passage of information, advice, opportunities, challenges, and support for the ultimate achievement of having fun while reaching their goals.
Vision:
Create opportunities for young people with disabilities to live their dream by linking potential with success.
Mission:
To give young people with disabilities the support and guidance they need to achieve their dreams and goal, have a sense of belonging and increase independence. Focus on ability not disability.
Objectives:Foster self growth/Increase confidence
Setting goals and achieving milestones
linking young people with opportunities to achieve their dreams
To encourage and promote the qualities and potential of young people with disabilities
To provide access to new networks and social opportunities
Winning a donation from Sovereign will help us achieve:
The awesomeness of a Sovereign Sunshine donation would be used to run Carabiner experience days and workshops. Both these events significantly contribute toward the personal development of our mentorees. Through introducing our participants to activities they are more likely to pick up a new hobby and as these events are open to the families of both mentors and mentorees they promote an individuals ability and promote greater disability awareness. Through linking potential with success we want to run positive programs that promote the common traits we share irrelevant to whether we do or do not have the disability.
