| Description: | As students have moved through the programme, the First Foundation has experienced firsthand that the financial hurdle is only one of a number of stumbling blocks for the students. There are equally damaging elements in their environment that can easily de-rail their study ambitions - a lack of role models, little career guidance, no budgeting or financial advice, and few people in their lives with the time or understanding to help them focus on and achieve their tertiary goals. It is little wonder then, that the volunteer programme run by the First Foundation for all of its students has grown in size and prominence over the last ten years. Selected from a wide range of backgrounds, each First Foundation volunteer has access to learning programmes which includes communication skills, diversity, goal setting and time management. There’s an old adage: if you need something done, ask a busy person. That surely applies to all First Foundation volunteers. All of our volunteers have hectic lives, and yet all manage to find the time in their busy schedules to help a young person achieve their potential. To become a volunteer with the First Foundation, you firstly need to believe in the vision. |
