What is Sovereign Sunshine?
In 2005, Sovereign launched a community-based programme called Sovereign Spirit. It was designed to promote health and wellbeing in local communities across New Zealand. Each month, Sovereign’s staff voted for a shortlisted not-for-profit organisation to receive funding of up to $15,000.
While the project proved extremely popular, we wanted to find a way to allow all four million New Zealanders to participate in the monthly vote. We also wanted to increase the focus of our community support programme to grow awareness and nationwide participation.
Sovereign Sunshine was born.
The idea is simple – create an online community; invite all New Zealand-registered children’s charities to provide their details; sort the various charities into cause-related groups; and invite all New Zealanders to join Sovereign’s staff in voting for which children’s charities should receive a proportion of up to $15,000 in funding each month. (Sovereign will donate $10,000 and match its staff’s contribution up to a maximum of $2,500).
In January 2010 we have changed the structure of the donations made to charities. The total donation of up to $15,000 is now divided between the six charities, whereas previously one donation was given to the charity with the most votes each month.
$10,000 is divided between the six monthly short-listed charities according to the proportion of the vote they receive. In addition to this, the winning charity receives an additional donation.
Sunshine Day is a mufti day held every month at Sovereign, and departments take turns to hold fundraising events and activities such as stair-races, garage sales, and lunch time quizzes. Donations made by staff on Sunshine Day are also matched dollar for dollar by Sovereign, up to a maximum of $2,500. The total of the staff donations and Sovereign’s matched contribution will also be given to the winning charity.
Sovereign Sunshine welcomes anyone wanting to help build a brighter future for Kiwi kids. By completing a simple registration process, you can take part in the monthly vote, volunteer your time to worthy causes, and/or make a donation to your favourite children’s charities.
